ISO 14001

Halifax was the first port in Canada and the second port in North America to become ISO 14001 certified for our environmental management system. Ocean Terminals was the first operation to be registered in December 2004, which was followed by Richmond Terminals in 2005 and both container terminals in 2006. Currently all of our operations are included in our ISO 14001 certified EMS.

What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is an international standard that establishes specific criteria for environmental management systems, similar to the ISO 9000 standard for quality management. The standard sets requirements for maintaining an environmental policy, for identifying environmental aspects and impacts of products, services, activities, for setting environmental objectives with measurable targets, for implementing programs to meet objectives and targets, for monitoring environmental performance and taking corrective actions where necessary, and for ongoing management review of environmental performance. Organizations that meet the standards of ISO 14001 minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities, and they achieve to continually improve their environmental performance.
